What is there to do in Rimini when it rains? A lot more than you might think!

Holidays are wonderful even if it rains when there are so many things to do and see

We know rainy days are not what you hope for during a holiday at the seaside, especially if you have children with you. But never fear! At the Club Family Hotel Village Rimini, we can recommend plenty of fun activities even when the sun isn’t shining, so your holiday will always be stress-free and full of adventure!

Museums to explore: dive into Rimini’s history...

Let’s begin with a fascinating cultural option which we’re sure will enrich your holiday: Rimini’s City Museums.

Rimini has no less than nine museums but, today, we invite you to visit the Luigi Tonini City Museum, perhaps saving the others to be explored on a sunny day. The Museum is located in the middle of the historic centre, housed in an old 18th-century building which was once a Capuchin monastery.

As Rimini’s civic museum, it retraces a millennia-old journey beginning with a primitive man on the beach and continuing through art and archaeology. Among its unique exhibits, some of the most notable are the surgical instruments of a 3rd-century doctor and a rare glass panel from his home which is displayed outside the Museum. In the picture gallery, you can admire the 14th-century masterpieces of the School of Rimini, inspired by Giotto, and works by artists such as Bellini and Ghirlandaio. Masters like Guido Cagnacci and Guercino then represent the 17th century. Finally, there is a space dedicated to the graphic production of René Gruau, a 20th-century illustrator from Rimini, some of whose works you are sure to recognise.

The Domus del Chirurgo, whose instruments can be seen in Museum, is situated in the adjacent Piazza Ferrari, a genuine archaeological site retracing a journey through 2000 years of the city’s history. In addition to the Domus del Chirurgo, this site of ancient Ariminum (Rimini’s Roman name) includes other testimonies such as a clinic, or taberna medica, a study and even a room for short stays. Following a fire which destroyed the timber parts of the house but preserved the mosaics and furnishings, now clearly visible, the area underwent construction of a palatial building in the 5th-6th-century followed by a medieval necropolis, homes and religious complexes. This historical treasure has survived intact and can now be visited, given the site’s value, in a fully covered exhibition path preserving it for future generations.

The Museum and the Domus del Chirurgo share an entrance and a single ticket, so it won’t cost you any extra to explore Rimini’s history through the various Roman and medieval artefacts. You can discover the ancient origins of the city of ‘Ariminum’ and better understand its logistical importance since the time of the Roman Empire.
